Black & Red Kibata Denim 8.5 oz
A raw, unprocessed Japanese denim with hidden depth and character
Sold in ½-yard increments; multiple units will be sent as one continuous piece.
“Kibata” refers to fabric left exactly as it comes off the loom—untreated, unwashed, and without shrinkage prevention. Nothing has been stabilized or corrected. The tension from weaving remains in the threads, and the natural variations in density and weave are part of its story. When washed or exposed to water, that tension releases, and the fabric will shrink and settle into itself.
The warp threads are black, while the weft threads are red and white. From the surface, the effect is subtle and dark. Turn it over, and the red becomes clearly visible—giving this denim a striking reverse side and beautiful potential for cuffs, facings, and exposed seams.
At 8.5 oz, this is a versatile midweight—structured but not heavy, with no stretch and a dry, honest hand.

What Makes It Unique
- Untreated, loomstate fabric that will shrink and settle after washing
- Natural unevenness from retained weaving tension
- Subtle exterior with bold red reverse
