Cosmic Albatross Sakiori Handwoven Shawl
A sense of motion—like something traveling just beyond what can be fully seen
This one-of-a-kind shawl is handwoven using sakiori, a traditional Japanese technique that transforms worn textiles into new cloth. Strips of vintage kimono fabric—primarily silk, with cotton and wool blended throughout—are torn and rewoven into a richly textured surface.
The artist describes the motif as an albatross moving freely between dimensions. You can see it in the composition: arcs, lines, and bursts of color crossing a deep indigo-violet ground. The result feels both structured and spontaneous, with small areas of brightness emerging across the surface.
Because a wide range of fabrics are used, the texture varies throughout—some areas are smooth, others softly raised or slightly fuzzy. These variations are inherent to sakiori and part of what gives the piece its depth and character.
Substantial but flexible, it can be worn as a shawl, wrapped as a scarf, or used as a striking textile accent in the home.
