Vintage Japanese Cotton Katazome -1/2 yd - Windowpane Vines
A beautiful example of Japan’s katazome tradition, this vintage cotton fabric features intricate patterns created using a rice paste resist and hand-cut stencils (katagami). Historically used for household textiles like futon covers and summer kimonos, katazome combines functional durability with striking visual repetition—an early form of screen printing, centuries before the modern version came to be.
This particular piece showcases a geometric windowpane motifs with abstract floral vines dyed with indigo and softened by time. As with all katazome, the depth of blue and crisp white contrast are hallmarks of this centuries-old craft.
