Originally designed for summer kimono (yukata), this lightweight Japanese cotton is perfect for patchwork, collage, quilting, and beyond. Whether vintage deadstock or newly woven, each piece tells a story through its unique dyeing techniques and traditional loom width.
A Fabric with History:
A bolt of yukata fabric (called a tan) is traditionally 12 meters long, enough to make a full kimono with no leftover fabric. Each cut from this length follows the classic 13.5"-14" (34-36 cm) loom width, ensuring authenticity in both structure and design.
Unlike Western textiles, kimono fabrics are woven at a fixed width to eliminate shoulder seams. This means you’ll often see patterns that face both directions on the bolt, reflecting a seamless, continuous design aesthetic.
