A vertical study in form and pattern

This handwoven sakiori tapestry is made from reclaimed kimono fabric that has been washed, dyed, torn into strips, and rewoven. Set against a vivid red ground, four simplified garment forms appear in sequence, inspired by the kosode—the historical predecessor to the modern kimono.

Each figure is woven directly into the cloth, using varied kimono textiles to create distinct patterns and textures. The result is both graphic and tactile, with each form carrying its own subtle variation.

Though minimal in composition, the piece holds a strong presence—well-suited for a narrow wall, entryway, or layered among other textiles.

Because a variety of reclaimed fabrics are used, the surface may show natural irregularities in texture, slight variation in shape, and areas of softness or fuzz. These are inherent to sakiori and part of its handmade character.

  • Handwoven using traditional sakiori technique

  • Made from reclaimed silk kimono textiles

  • Kosode (early kimono) motifs woven directly into the fabric

  • Bold red ground with varied pattern detail

  • One-of-a-kind piece
