Handwoven Sakiori - Meadow After the Rain
Handwoven in Japan using reclaimed kimono fabrics, this sakiori textile brings together soft greens, muted neutrals, and quiet flecks of color reminiscent of new growth emerging after rainfall. Sakiori—Japan’s rag-weaving tradition—is similar in spirit to American rag rugs, but woven much finer. Strips of old kimono cloth are washed, torn, and carefully rewoven to create textiles with subtle irregularities, warm texture, and a deeply personal character.
This piece incorporates plant-dyed cotton threads, Italian novelty yarn, and reclaimed kimono fabrics prepared by washing and tearing. Because the materials vary in elasticity, the width shifts naturally along the length—an inherent quality of true sakiori work. The cloth has been hand washed twice to test for colorfastness and shrinkage, and is ready to use as a scarf, table runner, or wall hanging.
