Vintage Miyako Yuzen Katagami No. 8 - Kasumi Clouds and Blossoms
Diagonal 5mm + 6mm
For centuries, Japanese textile artisans relied on katagami—beautifully hand-cut paper stencils—to create intricate resist-dyed patterns on kimono and other textiles. Today they are appreciated not only as remarkable tools of craftsmanship, but also as works of graphic art in their own right.
This authentic Miyako Yuzen Katagami was produced for the Japanese textile trade and features a traditional decorative motif, carefully cut into layers of handmade washi paper that were strengthened with fermented persimmon tannin (kakishibu). The result is a surprisingly durable stencil capable of producing thousands of impressions while preserving extraordinary detail.
Traditionally, katagami were placed over fabric and coated with rice-paste resist before dyeing. When the paste was washed away, the protected areas revealed the delicate pattern beneath. The precision required to cut these designs made katagami craftsmen some of Japan's most respected textile artisans.
Today these vintage stencils are equally at home in a textile collection, displayed as wall art, used as inspiration for embroidery or quilting, incorporated into mixed-media artwork, or carefully employed as decorative stencils for paper and fabric projects.
