Modern Japanese Rice Pouch by KZ Stevens

Choose from color-coordinated fabric packs or use your own scraps to create a bag in your unique style. It’s fully reversible and as simple or intricate as you’d like! Perfect for carrying your latest knitting project or even as a lunch tote.


Inspired by the Japanese Komebukuro, this modern version pays homage to traditional patchwork pouches used to carry rice offerings to temples or gifts for loved ones, tied with a drawstring cord.

Difficulty level: Clear instructions makes this project completely accessible to a beginner.

Dimensions of finished pouch: 6" square x 7" tall (15.25 x 17.75 cm). 

Recommended fabrics: medium weight linen or linen blend, quilting cotton or lightweight canvas. Requirements based on 44” wide fabric.

  • ¼ yd [23 cm] Exterior fabric OR various scraps/remnants, enough to make up a 25” x 8” rectangle [63.5 cm x 20.3 cm]
  • ¼ yd [23 cm] Lining fabric
  • (6) 3” x 4" [7.6 cm to 10 cm] fabric pieces for drawstring tabs
  • Additional fabric for appliqué pieces
  • 2 yds [2 m] cotton drawstring, or ¼“ [7 mm] cotton twill tape
  • ½ yd [46 cm] fusible woven interfacing OR use a layer of fabric OR heavier-weight fabric like canvas will provide extra body to the bag
