A playful textile for makers—lightweight, absorbent, and full of graphic charm.

This tenugui features a sewing-themed pattern inspired by the hiragana character ぬ (nu), which is also the verb “to sew.” Part of the Iroha Hankachi series, it reimagines traditional Japanese letter forms as modern, graphic textiles. The scattered needles, colorful stitch lines, and tiny printed characters create a rhythm that feels both whimsical and meditative—much like hand stitching itself.

This piece is dyed in Yokohama using the traditional Nassen technique, a specialty printing method prized for its crisp, multicolor detail. The fine lines and clean edges in this design are hallmarks of Nassen work—each pass of color layered carefully to create clarity and depth without stiffness.

Made from Wakaba cotton, a high-quality Japanese weave known for its absorbency and quick drying, this tenugui becomes softer with use while retaining its strength. The edges are sewn (unlike classic raw-edge tenugui), making it easy to carry as a handkerchief or tuck into a project bag.

Use it as a towel, wrap, wall hanging, or a unique piece of fabric for patchwork and sewing.

It won the Good Design Award, an award sponsored by the Japan Institute of Design Promotion, which is given to things with excellent design every year.
